Happy Holidays

I hope you all had a nice Christmas/Hanukah, or whichever holiday you celebrate. If you celebrate none then I hope you had a good weekend!

Ours was nice. We spend Christmas Eve with Greg’s family in Minnetonka. They have a nice new-ish house that over looks a pond on a golf course so it’s real purty. We had an excellent meal (prime rib) and then opened presents that we weren’t supposed to get. There was a strict no gifts rule. We were to only give donations to our favorite charity and no gifts (great, our share from Greg’s parents probably went to some republican thing). We gave to the Humane Society like we do every year. I will say that Greg’s parents reined in the gifts a lot this year. We got just some minor kitchen gadgets and stuff. Nice things.

Christmas Day was spent at my mom’s house with my Dad and Jackie and Bucky (mom’s brother, Alicia’s Dad). Bucky had gotten TiVo for my mom and had previously asked if Greg and I would help set it up. We both like to do stuff like that so we said ‘sure’. Well, we spend 5 hours working on it and it was still not working 100% when we left. I won’t go into all the gory details but suffice it to say that the TiVo Company is foul and so is Best Buy. But you probably already knew that about Big Blue. They flat out lied to Bucky about the amount of service he was buying. Anyway, just spoke to mom and it’s all up and running. She was able to record the “Ellen show all is good in the world.

When we got home from mom’s house Sue and Corey called and asked us to meet them at the one bar that was open on Christmas night. So we did and had a nice time. It was a good unwinding.

My last gift arrived today, it’s a DVD of “The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Neither Greg or I have seen the film yet but we laugh so hard at the commercials (“aaahhhhhkellyclarkson!) that he got it for me (us) anyway.

There is still one more thing I ordered for someone else that has not arrived yet (grrr) but it will be mine since I’ve already gotten a replacement gift for the person.

We mostly got movies (Batman Begins, The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane, A Mystery Science Theater, The Spiral Staircase) but I also got my dream sweater. I had a sweater that I loved so much and it just started to disintegrate (they do that after 15 or more years). I have been searching for several years for a replacement and this year we found it. So I got that. Thing is, it’s too damn warm out to wear it!

Hope everyone had a great Christmas and come on over and hang with us for new years eve!

Misha Update! Good news!

When I went in to get more cat food last week, the vet wanted to sell me something that would help raise Misha’s phosphorus levels. I said that I didn’t know if we should put her on anything new until they looked at her levels again to see if it was really needed. The vet said something like, “well, her levels were really bad. You know, they don’t get better. Then I remembered Betsy’s cat who’s kidneys began functioning again once she was on the right food. So I told the vet that and she said that well, then, maybe we can test her again. But I felt she thought I was wasting her time and my money.

So I brought Misha into the vet yesterday for a new blood test. At that time the vet tried again to sell me the phosphorus stuff and I said I’d rather wait until the results come back to make sure she needs it.

Good thing I did! I got a call this morning from the vet who said that Misha’s levels are almost all back to normal (including the phosphorus)! She called it a miraculous recovery. She admitted that when I brought Misha in at first she thought “it was curtains and I said I did too. But I guess Misha just wasn’t ready to go so she rallied and got better. I was pretty sure the vet and her techs didn’t believe me when I would describe how well she was doing at home. I could see they thought I was in denial. But now they know, it’s not just me. She IS better! I’m validated and my kitty is almost 100%. She still has kidney disease, but it’s not even a serious case. Oh and she gained ½ a pound since the last visit, which is a lot for someone who weighed only 5 lb. when I brought her in the first time. She’s almost at 6 pounds now. Wheee!!!

Thank you all so much for your concern and questions. This was a scary time for me. I can’t imagine being without her. However, I know I’ll have to someday as she is like 130 years old. So thanks everyone!

Our house on HGTV

I am writing to the the previous owner of the house to see if he had any neighbor trouble, but I don’t have his emial address here so I was looking for it online and I came across this:

HGTV Article

looks like the house (kitchen) was featured on HGTV! Funny! It doesn’t look like that at all anymore.

I hate mean people

I tried to find a photo of “mean neighbors, “nosey neighbors, or even “asshole neighbors to accompany this post, but was unsuccessful.

So picture, if you will, some of the nastiest, evil spirited folks, maybe in hillbilly get-up holding a pitchfork and maybe having horns. This is what I picture when I think of the group of jackasses in this otherwise wonderful neighborhood.

The latest in this string of things is that we are no longer allowed to park in our driveway and have to resort to finding street parking, even though we pay over seven thousand dollars in taxes each year.

I’ll back up. Our house is situated on the corner, so our driveway is not really in the alley like everyone else on the block, but it is parallel to the alley. It’s a small area that was built when people drove horse and carriage and not cars, so the driveway leading up to the garage is shorter than most. Because I cannot park in the garage (Greg gets the one spot because he has a nicer car, whatever, don’t get me started on that!) I have to park in the driveway. In doing so, my car overlaps the sidewalk a bit.

One walking down the sidewalk would not be shoved too far out of his or her way unless the person was 5 feel wide. Really, it’s maybe a few steps toward the street to avoid the car.

About a year ago some nosey jackass (female, if the writing is any indication) put a note on my car saying something to the effect of, “Do not park here, this is not your driveway, you’re going to get a ticket or something like that. Well, even though this was nowhere near official, it was written on a Kowalski’s Comment Card, I felt like maybe I should worry about it. Maybe I would get towed. This was pretty soon after we moved in so I wasn’t sure of all the rules.

So I called the City. I got transferred to many different departments until I got one person who assured me that even though the sidewalk was not my property, the driveway was, and as long as it didn’t cover too much of the sidewalk I could park there. He said, “I can’t imagine anyone caring about that! No meter person would give you a ticket. If they haven’t yet, they won’t So I continued to park there.

I also noticed that our neighbors across the street have this same set up and they park like this all the time. With two cars and presumably no problems.

Greg’s car has been parked there too lately because the garage is full right now.
Yesterday, Greg left and there was a meter person there, telling him that we were going to get a ticket if we didn’t move it. The person was nice enough, but the bottom line was that someone complained, so we have to move the cars. I guess he made it sound like it would be fine if no one had complained. But someone did.

So I moved the car. Then I called the City again. I got the traffic department who said that no, I was no allowed to park there. I said that I was previously told I could. She said that, well, then that person who told me that didn’t know any better. Then she said, “In fact, we just got a call about that this morning. A woman called to say that her mother fell and broke her hip because she had to walk around a car parked like that. I said to the woman, “Well, that’s too bad, but a person can slip and fall on the sidewalk whether they have to side step a car or not, the car has nothing to do with it, right?. She said, “Well, I don’t know, all I know is you can’t park there. Or something to that effect. She said that even though I pay a fortune in taxes I have no parking.

After I hung up the wheels started turning. I’ve realized that this is the work of a nasty neighbor who, for some reason, does not like us and is trying to get us in trouble, or to move.

Here’s what I’ve come up with:

I’ve gotten two notices about this parking situation (one informal, one formal) while my neighbor across the street has gotten none. She is still allowed to park that way. Anyone who walks by my house likely would have to walk by hers as well. So why is mine a problem and not hers?

Whomever the ass is who called the City, clearly made up that story. Firstly, what is a broke-hip-potential-person doing walking down the street before 9am? there is no one that fits that description (no one older than 60) that lives in the area, so what would she have been doing there? It just doesn’t fit. I could see it, if it were a day that the synagogue down the street had services or something, but this was a quiet Monday morning.

Secondly, Pu-leeze, if you’re going to come up with a story to get someone in trouble, don’t use the oldest cliché in the book. Old Lady Breaks Hip? Come on, be a little more creative. That story doesn’t even put me at fault. Like I said, taking two steps to the right isn’t going to be the reason someone falls.

This is the second issue that we’ve gotten complaints about. The first was right after we moved in. Someone called Animal Control to complain that the dogs were excessively barking one night, and that we were ignoring them. We were outside and the dogs were with us. Someone walked by the fence, which really startled them, and they barked. I tried to stop them and it continued. This means that whatever was on the other side of the fence was continuing to do whatever it was they were doing that was upsetting the dogs. The dogs didn’t bark for more than 1 minute. But it happened more than once that night. I now believe they were being goaded. Animal Control was called, they came out and there was no barking, of course. We got a note on the door telling us that a neighbor had called but that there was no citation because there were no dogs barking.

I now believe that this is the same person that is doing all of this. I do know many of my neighbors and they’re all wonderful. While at first thought the dog thing may have been our next-door neighbors, I no longer think that’s the case. They came to us (me) and said they didn’t like the dogs (Murphy, really) barking at them when they leave and come home. We’ve since talked about it and they’re fine. Or at least they said they’re fine. So I think it’s someone else.

I am really tempted to find out who it is and sue them for harassment. I just don’t know how I’d find out. I’m sure neither the City nor Animal Control will tell me.

Know any private detectives?
At least I can rest easy knowing that I have not done anything to this person and therefore they are at fault and Karma is a bitch.

Peace at last

I’ve got a tranquility fountain up and running on my desk. It’s lovely. All green, red and blue lights and running water. It’s very nice.

I’m ready to drift off to sleep now.

You, too, could have one of these

My house may be a star!

So when I went out the check the mail last night there was a note taped to the door that said that a location scout was in our area looking for locations for a TV commercial and that they might be interested in using our house.

So I called the guy this AM and after we talked a little he decided he wanted to come over this evening to see it. When I told him which house it was that we were talking about he said “Sweet!!

So tonight he will come over and if he likes it, someone else will come over and double check. Then they will come over on Friday to figure out how to set up everything, and then film on Monday. They would pay us, by the way. We could use the money so I’m totally open to it.

We do have a house concert this weekend but Jodi isn’t coming until Saturday and then I think, leaves on Sunday so they won’t be in our way. He seemed really interested in the concert thing too so I’ll have to be sure to invite him.

I’m wondering if they need a dog to use for the ad? Dudder is sure cute. But Murphy would probably understand commands better. Bear…well…she’s just Bear.

I am listening to Jamie Cullum’s new CD, “Catching Tales and it’s so good. His voice is just so soothing to me…and of course, the piano *sigh

What else? Greg and I both have colds. His started this weekend, mine this AM. I woke up at 3am with a horrid sore throat. I hate being sick and this will surely last through the house concert time. Sucks.

Oh well, here’s hoping my home becomes a star.
