Own it!

I was in the lunch room the other day and there are some folks who are usually in there having lunch (and playing pool) at the same time I am. We have a tv in the room and while it’s usually on Days of Our Lives, today it was on Hawaii 5-0. So the topic of conversation turned to old sitcoms and their stars. As all things of that nature do, it came to Scott Baio. Those of you who have known me for a hundred years know that there was a time in my life where I thought I knew everything there was to know about Mr. Baio. I know now that that’s not true. How do I know that? Because I have been watching two seasons of his reality TV show. I am actually glad that as an impressionable 15 year old who thought she was in love I am glad I didn’t know the real Scott Baio. I would have been horrified.

Anyway…so co-worker #1 says, “You know he has a reality show ‘Scott Baio is 46 and Pregnant’?” He says, “Yeah, I saw a little bit of it the other day as I was flipping channels”. He then mentions a couple of other things about the show then says again, “I wasn’t really watching it…I just saw…”. It seemed like he was trying to convince us all that he doesn’t really watch it. The other two look at him like he’s making it up. So I interjected, ‘it’s true, I just watched the season finale last night.’ I did.

This guy does the same thing with Days. He will make fun of us who are paying attention to it, then when someone says, “I wonder why that guy…” he comes up with the answer. Then it’s, “Oh I just saw it one the cover of soap opera digest while I was at the store.” umm-hmm right.

Another time one of the other people was trying to remember the name of someone on Saved By The Bell. He knew it. (so did I) then says, “I don’t know why I even know that, I never watched the show.” and goes on to name 3 other actors (and I use the term ”actors’ loosely) from the show. It went on like that for a couple more shows (coworker #2: Wasn’t Tracy Gold someone’s sister too?” coworker #1: “yes, her sister was Missy Gold, she was on Benson”.)

Here I am thinking, you know what? If you watch crappy reality TV shows, soap operas and sitcoms from the 80s, own it! Big deal. You may find out that others will admit to it too.

**On a related note: last night some friends and I were discussing brushes with fame and turns out of my friends met the actor who played Mr. Belding.
