POTD: Day 113

From Photo a day

Friday, Marcy, 13, 2009.
I’m pregnant! Oh good lord, no I am not.
As you may know, I test products for a couple of different companies and I’m currently testing caffiene strips. You dunk them in coffee or tea to see if it’s truly decaf. This shows that the Ginger tea really IS decaf and the company coffee is not.
What I don’t like about it, is that it’s “not cliabrated for beverages containing milk, cream, powdered reamer, syrups or other additives” yet their markting says things like “Don’t you want to know if that latte you were served really is decaf?”
So that’s going to get a bad vote from me. I’m gonna try it on pop. It doesn’t say anything about pop on it. Probably won’t work.
I may even try pee just to see ;)

Thursday March 26, 2009. Day 112. Charlie begging for my breakfast. We go through this every morning, but he was especially interested today, enough to put his paws on the table.

Wednesday March 25, 2009. Day 111. Greg praying and Charlie trying to escape. Not sure what’s really going on here. Ghost jump in front? Or perhaps I just had my hand over the lens.

The Big Cupcake Bake-Off

From Photo a day

The Big Cupcake Bake-off. Sue and I both found a chocolate mint cupcake recipe the same day last week and decided we’d each make the one we found and taste test them. In my opinion Sue’s won. Mine were just too dense and heavy. I loved the flavor of both but Sue’s wins on texture for me. All in all the tastes were pretty similar. In short they’re both good. Well, they’re chocolate cupcakes, what’s not to like?

Sue’s are from [Love and Olive Oil] which is a fantastic food blog. These cupcakes happen to be vegan (the frosting is not)

Mine are from [Simply Recipes] one of my all time favorite food blogs.

UPDATE 3/24/2009: I commented on Elise’s blog and asked what I may have done wrong. She was nice enough to reply, “Use room temp eggs. Make sure your baking powder is fresh (less than 6 months old, if older throw out and get new). Don’t over mix batter. Work fast and get cupcakes into oven as soon as you get the batter mixed. Test for doneness at 15 minutes, as your oven may be running hot. ~Elise”
Well, I’m proud (?) to declare I did all those things wrong. My eggs were cold, my baking soda is maybe from this decade, and when I tested the cakes at 18mn I thought they were too gooey looking and left them in 5 more minutes. However, I did not over mix and I did work quickly getting them into the oven asap. I’m totally gonna try them again…right this time. This is why I cook and not bake. I am no chemist.

Another thing is last night I let mine sit out (they’re stored in the fridge) for at least 1 1/2 hours before eating (that was really had, I could smell them and I was drooling) and they were much more moist.
